In a remarkable display of leadership and community spirit, local Scouts BSA Troop 62 member Leland Schnieders recently completed an ambitious Eagle Scout project that has added a new dimension to the community’s recreational spaces. Schnieders led his fellow scouts in designing and constructing a “hammock village,” a stand designed to hold multiple hammocks, providing a unique and cozy gathering spot for residents at the D.C. Rogers Lake campground.
Despite the challenges posed by inclement weather, Leland and his team of five dedicated scouts (along with two adults) persevered, completing the project in a single rainy day. This feat not only exemplifies Leland’s commitment to his community but also his ability to inspire and lead others. Extra help was provided by Mike Raymore of Raymore Construction, who showed up with a skid-steer to dig the holes for the posts. Leland stayed in close contact with the City of Fayette Parks Department through the planning and approval phase of this project. The posts used for the project were reclaimed utility poles that had been destined for destruction, so their reuse saved not only money but also had a positive environmental impact.
“Leland’s project is not just a testament to his personal growth and leadership skills, but also a shining example of the values and experiences that the Scouts BSA program aims to instill in young individuals,” said Troop 62 Scout Leader Brad Dudenhoffer. “Through this program, youth are encouraged to undertake projects that not only challenge them but also contribute positively to their communities.”
The hammock village is situated at the south end of the campground in Fayette’s scenic D.C. Rogers Lake, and offers a unique spot for relaxation and socialization. It reflects the ingenuity and hard work of Howard County youth and serves as a reminder of the importance of community service. Leland’s project has not only beautified the park but has also created a space where people can come together, relax, and enjoy the outdoors.
“The Scouts BSA program continues to be a vital part of our community, shaping the leaders of tomorrow through its focus on character development, citizenship, and personal fitness,” Dudenhoffer said. “Leland Schneiders’ successful project is a beacon of the positive impact that scouting can have on young people and their communities. As hammocks swing gently in the breeze, the village stands as a symbol of the dedication, teamwork, and community spirit that embodies the heart of the Scouts BSA program.”
