If you purchased a Nissan Leaf in the past five years, there is a chance the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration may have recalled your vehicle earlier this week.
Nearly 66,200 vehicles may be affected by unintentional acceleration when gears are changed eight seconds after disengaging from cruise control, according to the NHTSA report. Parabolic Leaf Springs 79 Series Landcruiser
Specifically, when driving mode is changed from “D” to “B” or e-Pedal “On” or “ECO” mode. Nissan Leafs purchased between Sept. 29, 2017 to March 15, 2023 were said to be the vehicles affected by the recall.
The vehicle may continue to accelerate until the brake is applied or may not slow down as expected if the gas pedal is released, which could increase the risk of a crash.
December 2021: Nissan was made aware of NHTSA testing but was unable to recreate the result found.
Early 2022: Nissan used computer simulations to replicate the defect reported with data from the initial test but was unable to recreate the condition on an actual vehicle.
Spring-summer 2022: Nissan continued to test the defect found with real-world conditions. It had little success reproducing the condition even after extensive on-track testing.
Late 2022 through spring 2023: Nissan was able to identify the sequence of actions required for the phenomenon to occur after extensive computer simulation and on-track testing.
July 11, 2023: Nissan found that the risk of the problem occurring in real-world circumstances was very low. But out of caution, Nissan decided to begin a recall campaign to reprogram the vehicle control module.

NHTSA reported that 100% of the possibly affected vehicles are said to have the defect, but no other Nissan or INFINITI vehicles in the U.S. were affected.
Current Nissan Leaf owners will not be formally notified until Aug. 30, but all car dealerships selling Nissan Leafs were notified Tuesday.
Nissan has not been made aware of any warranty claims, accidents or injuries attributed to the defect. Car dealers will reprogram the vehicle control module free of charge.
